Level Cap
Caps your characters' base level until the next story boss falls, and limits how many jobs and races of each tier they can take up. Beating a boss on the list raises the cap and the limits, so the story's fights stay a challenge without grinding past them.
- A new game starts with a cap of 5. Each boss on the list raises it once beaten, and the cap is always the highest one you have reached, so beating a later boss early raises it straight away.
- EXP past the cap is lost, and EXP items have no effect at the cap. Menus show each level with its maximum (Lv 1 / 5, the cap for the base level), yellow once reached, and the status screen shows it (25/25) where it would show COMPLETE.
- No level is ever lowered. Companions who join above the cap, and levels the story sets itself (like the party lifted to 64 at the Great Decision), stay as they are; those characters gain no EXP until the cap passes them.
- Each tier (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Sealed, Forbidden) has its own limit, for jobs and for races. A job or race counts once it reaches level 2. Jobs and races a character already counts can always be switched to; a new one only while its tier has room. The job change screen shows each tier's count on its tab (Basic 2/3: two taken, three allowed), greys out the rest and tells which tier is full.
- Jobs and races a character joins with, or gets from the story, count but are never taken away, even past the limits. The Reaper's growth reset frees the room again.
- The final battle of the Chaos route lifts the cap and every limit.
- Whether a boss is beaten comes from the game's own story switches and variables, the same ones that open its rematch in Hades. Saves from before you installed the mod get the cap they have earned.
Options
With Mod Config Remake (opens in a new tab) or the Mod Config Menu, Level Cap in the mod options turns the cap on or off, and Job and Race Limits below it the limits. Both are on by default and are kept in each save.
Bosses
The cap after beating each boss, and how many jobs and races per tier (Basic/Intermediate/Advanced/Sealed/Forbidden) each character may take up. Boss Level is the boss's own level in the game. Bosses missing from the list, like side bosses, raise nothing.

Install
- Install the community's mod loader: the
Patch.rb from Patch.rb (enable Type 1 mods) (opens in a new tab) on the MGQ wiki, in your Patch folder. If you already use other Patch folder mods, you have it.
- Download
Level_Cap.rb (opens in a new tab) and put it into the Patch folder.
To uninstall, delete Patch\Level_Cap.rb. Your levels, jobs and races stay as they are.
Compatibility
Tested on 3.06 with the English translation.
The mod replaces no game methods. It runs alongside these, leaving what they do unchanged, and hooks them once the first scene starts, so it also wraps the versions the newer translation's plugins define:
Game_Actor#max_level, to hold the base level at the cap
Game_Interpreter#level_adjust and #command_316, so levels the story sets go past the cap
Foo::JobChange::Window_ClassName#class_change_enable?, to grey out jobs and races of a full tier
Foo::JobChange::Window_ClassType#draw_item, #command_name and #update, for the counts on the tier tabs
Foo::JobChange::Window_ClassStatus#draw_status, and #draw_page_title of the translation's paged job details, to tell which tier is full
#draw_actor_level of Window_Base and of every window that draws levels its own way, to show each level with its maximum
Window_Base#draw_actor_simple_status and #draw_text, to show the cap on the status screen and make room for the maximum
